WHAT IS THE CHURCH?
Since the Lord’s church is not a material building, a social institution or a denominational
body among other things, we might need to discuss what the church is. To begin with, the
word “church” means “the called out.” That is the literal meaning of the word in the New
Testament that is translated as “church.” In other words, the church consists of a group of
people who have been called out from or out of the world and as a result have met the conditions
of salvation or conditions of being a member of the Lord’s church__the church we read about in
the New Tes- tament.
The New Testament speaks of the church as a kingdom, a body, a household and so on. The
church is also called the church of God, the church of Christ, the church of the firstborn, as well
as other terms. Keep in mind that there is but one scriptural church, but it has a number of
names (or terms) by which it may be called. Thus the church is to wear the names that are found
in the New Testament. Please keep that in mind.
As already stated, the church is made up of those who have left world for the joy of serving
the living God. Thus, when one obeys God or when becomes a Christian, he is automatically
added to the church__the Lord’s church__the church of the New Testament. Since one is added to
the church upon being saved or becoming a Christian, then it stands to reason that one must
become a member of the Lord’s body in order to be saved in this present world and in the world
to come.
The church belongs to the Lord. He established it (Matt. 16: 18). He is its foundation (1 Cor.
3:1). He is its head (Eph. 5:23). He adds the saved to it (Acts 2:47). He is the Savior of it (Eph. 5:23). The church is the Lord’s body, a glorious body without spot or wrinkle (Eph. 5:27) and it
shall never be destroyed (Heb. 12:28). There are some people who do not like the church of Christ. We hope and pray that you are
not in that number. We welcome an open and honest investigation of what we believe and teach
and practice. We invite any and all to visit our services and see for themselves.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Are you wrinkled with burden? Come to worship for a faith lift!
