LET US SEEK TO DO GOOD

I recently read that in an old English church building a memorial table bears this inscription:

“In the year 1653, when all sacred things throughout the nation were either demolished or pro-
faned, Sir Robert Shirley, Baronet, founded this church, whose singular praise it is to have done

the best things in the worst times and hoped them in the most calamitous.”

A study of English history shows how turbulent the times were back then. A civil war had re-
sulted in the king being beheaded. The nation was torn by strife and dissension--the atmosphere

reeked with hated. The overall outlook for the times was dark indeed. In such a dismal age, Sir
Robert Shirley decided to act and to do something constructive--he built a church building! Then,
as now, the worst of times demanded the best of deeds! Who better to do the best of things than
Christians?!
There are things happening in the world today that are troublesome indeed: continued war in

the Middle East; an economy that seems to be out of control; a mounting national debt; immoral-
ity by so many; the continued killing of unborn babies by means of abortion. If you are bothered

and disturbed over the crises of the times and the conditions of our day, throw all your influence
with all your might on the side for right. Cast your lot with those individuals who are trying to
make a difference for good. Paul wrote, “that ye may become blameless and harmless, children
of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom ye are
seen as lights in the world,” (Phil. 2:15). When all around you does dark, let the light of your
Christian faith shine ever so brightly. Jesus said, “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have
lost its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out
and trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a lamp, and put it under the bushel, but on the stand; and it shineth unto all
that are in the house. Even so let your light shine before men; that they may see your good
works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven” (Matt. 5:13-16). If ever there was a time for men to let their lights shine, I would think that now is the time.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: A blessed farmer is one who has raised a bumper crop of good
sons!

Love ya,
Jesse
