THE ESSENCE OF GOD (#3)
Today we conclude our discussion of the nature of God. Previously we said that the Bible reveals
God by describing His nature. The last two Sundays we discussed five attributes of God’s nature: 1) God
is eternal. 2) God is spirit. 3) God is one. 4) God is omniscient. 5) God is omnipotent. Today we want to
consider three more characteristics of God’s nature.
6. God is omnipresent. This term means that God is present in all places. This does not mean that God
is the material universe we see all around us. The Psalmist teaches of God’s omnipresence in the fol-
lowing way: “Whither shall I go from thy Spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend
up into heaven, thou art there: If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the
morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, And thy right
hand shall hold me” (Psa. 139:7-10). There is no place high enough or deep enough to escape God’s
presence.
7. God is immutable. The term immutable simply means “unchanging.” God is “...the same yesterday, today, yea, and forever” as it is said of Jesus in Hebrews 13:8. We also read “I am the Lord, I change
not...” (Mal. 3:6). There is no shadow or turning in any of His nature or character. “...God is light and in
Him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). There never has been and there never will be. God does not
change--He is righteous. He always has been and always will be! He does not change--His is holy. He
always has been and always will be! God does not change and His will as revealed in the New Testament
does not change!
8. God is faithful. God will be true to His Word. He will not deny Himself or His Word. God cannot lie
(Heb. 6:18; Titus 1:2). The apostle Paul said very plainly “There hath no temptation taken you but such
as man can bear: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but
will with the temptation make also the way of escape, that ye may be able to endure it” (1 Cor. 10:13). He also wrote, “But the Lord is faithful, who shall establish you, and guard you from the evil one” (2
Thess. 3:3). When we consider these eight attributes of the nature of God, it is quite evident that our God truly is
a Great God!
