THE WORK OF ANGELS
Last week we discussed the nature of angels. We said that 1) they are heavenly beings; 2) they are
created beings; 3) their number is innumerable; 4) they do not marry nor have offspring; 5) they are
subject to God’s will. At the end of that article, we said that we would discuss the work of angels to-
day. So here goes:
1. They are God’s messengers. Often in God’s dealings with man, both in the Old and New
Testaments, He used the medium of angels. Since we now have a complete revelation from God (Gal.
1:6-9), we do not need special revelation through angels.
2. They worship God. “And I saw, and I heard a voice of many angels round about the throne and the
living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and
thousands of thousands” (Rev. 5:11). In the heavenly realm there is a great host of angels who praise
God around His throne.
3. They minister to the saved. “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to do service for the
sake of them that shall inherit salvation?” (Heb. 1:14). Angels are concerned about the welfare of
God’s people and they minister accordingly. What they do is not specifically described, and to try to
describe such is merely conjecture and speculation--yet they do minister to those who are heirs of sal-
vation. For that we should be thankful.
4. Angels assist the dying. The spirit of Lazarus was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom
(Luke 16:22). This is the basis for the old song, “O, come angel band, come and around me stand.” It
is comforting to know that even in death God has provided for us.
5. Angels shall come with Christ when He returns. They mighty and holy angels shall accompany
Jesus at His second coming (2 Thess. 1:7-9; Matt. 25:31). Since they are made mighty and holy, they
will be able to accomplish their work efficiently (Matt. 13:24-43). Our interest in angels should not be a matter of simple curiosity, but we should have a deep interest
in what these beings have done regarding our spiritual welfare. We are thankful to God for His grace
which makes salvation possible and for His angels who have played a part in His great plan.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: It may be true that life begins at forty, but everything else starts
to wear out, fall out, or spread out!
Have a great week!
