RUNNING ONE WAY, THEN T'OTHER
A man was walking along a road in the cool of the evening and saw a big drove of hogs, with
their ears pricked up, running first one way, then t’other, and seeming to be terribly confused. He
could not understand what the trouble was with them. Presently he came to a little farmhouse and
stopped to inquire of an old man sitting on the porch. “Mister are those your hogs up there in the
woods?” “Yep, they sure are,” replied the old man. “Well, there’s something wrong with your
hogs--they are running first one way, then t’other with their heads and ears up.”
“Well, let me tell you about that,” the old timer said. “You see it’s feeding time. Before I lost
my voice I’d take a basket of corn up there and give a call or two and they came running to me,
but since I’ve lost my voice, I just take my cane and knock on a tree and when they hear that,
they come running to eat. But lately the woodpeckers have been getting on a dry limb and when
the hogs hear them pecking, they think it’s my knock and get confused.”
There is a moral to that story. Religiously people are running different directions today--they
are hearing strange noises and they are confused. So many different voices are saying, “This is
the way,” that the average person has just about forgotten the familiar ring of the Master’s voice.
There is nothing worse than confusion. It’s bad enough in a community, in politics, in the
home--but it is far worse when it comes to the field of religion. Jesus taught, “...if a house be
divided against itself, that house cannot stand” (Mark 3:25). He even said, “...if Satan rise up
against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand...” (Mark 3:26). If division will rob the devil of
his power, what do you think it will do to the religious world? The heathens said to the mission-
ary, “Go home, get together with others in your own land and then come back and convert us.” It
was a fitting rebuke--one that the religious world justly deserves. More on this subject next week.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Give all you can because no one ever saw a hearse pulling a
U-Haul.
Have a great week!
Love ya,
Jesse
