THE CHURCH SHOULD WEAR CHRIST'S NAME

Because Christ established the church of the New Testament, it is only right that it should
wear His name. Christ said, “...I will build my church...” (Matt. 16:18). In other words
the church was to be established by Christ and it was established by Him as He had
promised in Acts 2. Therefore we have the church of Christ. That is the church which
belongs to Christ and as a result wears His name. The term “church of Christ” simply means
Christ’s church.
Paul, in speaking of the various congregations of the Lord’s people, sent this salutation to the
church in Rome: “...the churches of Christ salute you” (Rom. 16:16). But someone is ready to say,
“But that does not say anything about the churches of Christ__Paul is referring to various
denominations (or churches of Christ) that existed at that time.” Such folks are mistaken. There
was but one church in Paul’s day (Eph. 4:4; Col. 1:18). However, there were a number of
congregations of that one church that I mentioned earlier. Think about this: Wherever there is a
plural there must of necessity be a singular. Thus the plural is “churches of Christ,” the
singular, therefore, would have to be “a church of Christ.” If not, why not?
If one needs more proof, consider the statement by Paul in connection with the Lord’s people
in Corinth: “Now ye are the body of Christ, and severally members thereof” (1 Cor. 12:27). Paul
tells us in Colossians 1:18 and Ephesians 1:22-23 that the body is the church. Thus, the body of
Christ is nothing more than the church of Christ.
Considering all these facts, there is but conclusion: Any church that would wear any name
other than the name of Christ could not possibly be the Lord’s church that we read about in the
New Testa- ment.
Are you a member of the church that wears the name of Christ, that belongs to Christ? If not,
then please think on these matters and honestly investigate the church of Christ. We plead with
all men to turn to God’s Word and learn the truth about the church for themselves. Don’t take
our word for it. Study it for yourself. When a person lays aside the false concepts and traditions
they have been taught, the truth is not hard to understand.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: If you are in the wrong place, the right place is empty.

Love ya,
Jesse
