WHERE DOES THE TIME GO...?
We are drawing nearer to the end of 2019 with every day that passes. Like it not--ready or
not--2020 can be seen on the horizon. The question that keeps coming to mind is, “Where does
the time go and how does it go so quickly?” Nearing the end of another year (in a few weeks we
will be in the last quarter of 2019), should cause us to reflect on the fact that life is so brief.
James asks, “...What is your life? For ye are a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then
vanisheth away” (Jas. 4:14b). Job also speaks of the brevity of life in Job 14:1-2: “Man that is
born of a woman, is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut
down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.” Yes, without a doubt, life on this earth is
indeed brief.
The Bible also says that life is uncertain--we do not know what is going to happen tomorrow.
James also wrote, “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow...” (Jas. 4:14a). The
writer of the book of Proverbs concurs: “Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not
what a day may bring forth” (27:1). We do not know what the future holds. If we knew for
certain what some days would bring forth, we might not want to even get out of bed!
Realizing that life is fleeting and uncertain, we would do well to heed the words of the
Psalmist: “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom” (90:12).
James writes, “For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall both live, and do this or that”
(Jas 4:15). That should be our attitude as we see the days so swiftly turning to years. Brethren,
while we may not know what the future holds, we CAN know Who holds the future in His
hands!
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Be as kind as you can be today--tomorrow you may not be
here!
Have a great week!
Love ya,
Jesse
