THE RIGHT DIRECTION

The fact that Jesus invites shows that men are apart from God and need to come to God. This
is the reason behind the Lord’s invitation--that men move in the right direction (Matt. 11:28-30).
Men have separated themselves from the Lord. It is sin that alienates us from God (Isa. 59:1-2).
Sin is a burden that men cannot successfully carry in this life and into the next life. Men need
relief and rest from that burden. Apart from God there is no rest to be found. The invitation to
men to “come” indicates that men are separated from God.
God wants men to move in the right direction. He wants men to come to Him. God would not
invite men to come if He did not want men to come and if He did not want fellowship with men.
Have you ever thought about how God must feel when His invitation is rejected? It must be of-
fensive to Him. “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And
let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely” (Rev. 22:
17). Jesus said, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the
door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” (Rev. 3:20).
Man can move in the right direction. He can come to God. The Great Invitation shows that
men can come to the Lord. It is possible for men to accept this invitation. Peter says that “...ye
were as sheep going astray” and tells us that the Christian has “...now returned unto the Shep-
herd and Bishop of your souls” (1 Pet. 2:25). God and Christ would not invite men if men were
incapable of coming. “...If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink. He that believeth on
me, as the scripture hath said, from within him shall flow rivers of living water” (John 7:37-38).
The gospel is God’s power unto salvation (Rom. 1:16). When God calls by means of the gospel,
He expects men to answer (Acts 2:40; 2 Thes. 2:13-14).
Say, are YOU moving in the right direction today?
